Megan closed the four day National event by adding one more to the Team BC and Aberdeen Judo medal count! A hard fought silver in the Senior women's category. Way to go, Megan!

CRAIG AND BONNIE: BLACK BELTS

Aberdeen Judo is proud to present our two newest black belts, Craig Basaraba and Bonnie Cleland! Craig and Bonnie worked extremely hard to prepare and that effort paid off with their stellar performances before the JudoBC grading board.

Along with their own studies, both members were also instrumentally important to our junior program, truly embodying the judo value of mutual welfare and benefit (Jita Kyoei).

Great job Craig and Bonnie!

ABERDEEN JUDO'S NEWEST ORANGE BELTS

Congratulations to Sadie and Suleiman on tonight's promotions! Both candidates were given surprise exams on Thursday night and proved that they were up to the task. Any time, anywhere. That's judo spirit! Keep up the great effort!

A WRAP ON THE 2024 JUNIORS SEASON

That's a wrap! Last night marked the last junior practice of the season. New rank promotions were awarded after all students successfully passed last week's grading exams.

We also saw the graduation of Chase and Harper, who will now be joining us in the senior program. Great job on the hard work shown by all students and we look forward to seeing you return in September for a fresh new season!

KAMLOOPS ICE BREAKER TOURNAMENT

What a great time had by all at the inaugural Ice Breaker tournament held here in Kamloops! The kids all fought hard and showed excellent Judo Spirit making good use of all of the skills they've picked up throughout the season.

Special thanks to the parents, senior judoka and, of course, Mr. Huntley who gave up their Saturday morning to help make this a success.

10th ANNUAL OKANAGAN OPEN TOURNAMENT

Aberdeen Judo junior judoka represented very well at the 10th annual Okanagan Open Novice tournament in Kelowna today. Thank you to the tournament organizers for a very well run event! Great job everyone!

The Aberdeen Judo juniors were all smiles on Tuesday. After weeks of hard work and preparation all candidates successfully passed their grading exams and were awarded their new stripes, belts and certificates. Congratulations to everyone. We hope to see you all next season.

BLAKE AT THE BC OPEN SHIAI

Congratulations to Aberdeen Judo's Blake McIntosh for his gold medal performance at yesterday's BC Open Shiai in Vernon. Blake had an impressive showing, winning all four of his matches by Ippon.

2023 JUNIORS GRADING

Another big night at the ol' dojo! Congratulations go out to our junior program members. After last week's formal grading, Aberdeen Judo instructors were proud to award the kids with their new ranks in tonight's promotion ceremony. Keep up the great work everybody!

ABERDEEN JUDO'S LATEST BLACK BELTS

Aberdeen Judo has two new black belts to add to its membership! After years of hard work, diligent practice and countless hours on the mat, Matthew and Graeme Hanks successfully completed their grading exams before the JudoBC grading board this past Sunday.

The brothers were presented with their new belts and certificates at last night's practice. We excitedly welcome them to our yudansha ranks and couldn't be prouder of their accomplishments.

BC WINTER GAMES – ABERDEEN JUDO WINNERS!

The 2020 BC Winter Games held in Ft. ST. John on February 20 – 23 saw over 1000 participants in a variety of sports. In the judo competitions, Aberdeen Judo’s Zone 2 team competitors each brought home medals; Maggie Sinclair – Gold in her +70Kg. match. Graeme Hanks won bronze in his -60Kg. match!

Both also fought in the Zone team competitions, achieving bronze medals for their Zone 2 winning 3rd place overall. Coaching Zone 2 competitors was Megan Hanks, presented with a separate COACH medal for her activities! Congratulations to all three of our judoka!

Aberdeen Judo Academy scores again!

A long day (8AM – 8PM) participating in the annual Steveston Judo Tournament on Saturday, December 3, 2019. Tyler Campbell – 11 year old Tyler won a gold medal in the Under 14 novice division! Graeme Hanks – a 14 year old perennial medallist; won a bronze medal in the U16 division!

Nicholas Plumtree – 15 year old Nicholas, competing in two divisions won a gold medal in the under 21 division won a silver medal in the U18 division! Tony Plumtree – father of Nicholas - gold medal in his Senior Men’s ne-waza (grappling only) division competing against larger opponents at times!

Megan Hanks – our senior-ranked competitor, 2nd degree black belt, in addition to her refereeing & judging duties during the entire day, also donned her judo outfit and proceeded to win (gold medal) her Women’s ne-waza (grappling only) division, and also participated in a ‘stand-up judo’ exhibition match with a senior female competitor from Lake Country Judo Club (Winfield) who had no opponents to compete against. Another win for Megan!

Both also fought in the Zone team competitions, achieving bronze medals for their Zone 2 winning 3rd place overall. Coaching Zone 2 competitors was Megan Hanks, presented with a separate COACH medal for her activities! Congratulations to all three of our judoka!

GIANT FORD CIRCUIT CHAMPIONS

Montreal – For the first time in Judo Canada history, two judoka have been awarded a bursary as champions of the Giant Ford Canadian Circuit. Megan Hanks and Shady El Nahas were given a check for $2,500 after their performance on the brand new national-level competition circuit. “On behalf of our staff and management, Sherwood Ford is very pleased to be able to provide funding to two very deserving Canadian athletes. By their success, Shady El Nahas (NTC – Montreal) and Megan Hanks (Aberdeen Judo Academy – Kamloops) have enjoyed the benefit of participating in the Giant Canadian Circuit Ranking Sponsorship,” said Marc Hicks, the owner of Sherwood Ford.

The bursaries offered by Sherwood Ford will help the athletes to reach their dreams. “It feels amazing receiving this bursary, I am very honoured. My season has been pretty good this year as I’ve been on a good winning streak, and also because I just took my first big steps into the big leagues and trying to qualify for the Olympic Games in 2020, held in Tokyo,” said Shady El Nahas. “It’s nice to have support from others. It gives me the feeling that my efforts have paid off, and all my hard work is being noticed.” The 2018 Giant National Ranking was generated using points from Elite National until Canada Cup.

“One of our goals in the last strategic plan was to stimulate growth of our national circuit, and that’s why the Canadian Circuit was created. The sponsorship offered by Sherwood Ford was a key element to increase its visibility,” commented Nicolas Gill, CEO and High Performance Director for Judo Canada.

Indeed, there were over 350,000 views on the national federation streaming platform (judocanada.tv). The mission will continue next year, with the addition of another tournament, the Saskatchewan Open, that will be webcast in October. “We’re happy to announce that Sherwood Ford will be our sponsor again next year,” added Nicolas Gill. “We’re also adding a new tournament that will be webcast live.”

“Participation in the Canadian circuit events exposes all competitors to a high quality of judo, a high-level competition and something to aspire to. No matter your generation, someone you watched motivated you to strive for success in our sport.
